چکیده

Previous research has shown that methane may have been sustained at high concentrations in the Archean atmosphere, helping to offset lower insolation and solve the faint young sun problem. However, recent updates to the HITRAN (High-Resolution Transmission) line database have significantly increased the shortwave absorption by CH4 in comparison to older versions of the database (e.g. HITRAN 2000). Here we investigate the climatological implications of strong shortwave CH4 absorption in an Archean atmosphere rich in CH4. We show that the surface warming at CH4 abundances > 10 is diminished relative to the HITRAN 2000 line data. Strong shortwave absorption also results in a warm stratosphere and lower tropopause. We discuss these results in the context of contemporary research on the Archean climate and how these results could affect the formation of stratospheric clouds and an organic haze.

Implications of present-day abiogenic methane fluxes for the early Archean atmosphere

[1] During Earth’s early history, greenhouse warming by atmospheric methane helped to maintain elevated surface temperatures. Here, we estimate the present-day abiogenic CH4 flux generated by mineral alteration (serpentinization) at midocean ridges, volcanic emissions, and geothermal sources; in addition, we assess the impact that abiogenicmethanemay have had on greenhouse warming during the ea...

تغییرات غلظت گازهای گلخانه‌ای دی‌اکسید کربن و متان در ارتباط با متغیرهای محیطی در ایران

Global warming and climate change due to increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) concentration caused widespread concerns in the national and international societies. Carbon dioxide and methane as the most important greenhouse gases in the atmosphere account for more than about 80% of global warming due to greenhouse gases emission. In this study, Multivariate linear regression (method: enter and st...

Persistence of climate changes due to a range of greenhouse gases.

Emissions of a broad range of greenhouse gases of varying lifetimes contribute to global climate change. Carbon dioxide displays exceptional persistence that renders its warming nearly irreversible for more than 1,000 y. Here we show that the warming due to non-CO(2) greenhouse gases, although not irreversible, persists notably longer than the anthropogenic changes in the greenhouse gas concent...

Meat-eating: The Second Main Culprit of Climate Change

Background: Due to the greenhouse gases emission caused by human activities there is wide agreement about global warming. Methane is one of the most dangerous greenhouse gases in the global warming process which is produced through human activities and natural processes. In addition, the use of fertilizers and chemical pesticides would produce nitrogen monoxide in the atmosphere. This gas is an...
